DCB July Summer Beer Tasting at Bauer Wine and Spirits
Hi all!
It's time for our third beer tasting down at Bauer Wine and Spirits on Newbury St. Its officially summer now and its time we presented you with some good summer beers. Without giving too much away up front we can say there will be some very special surprises at this tasting. Surprises that involve us taking a car, then a bus, then a ferry to get them for you. If you've figured out what we're talking about, well then we know you're excited, if you haven't, well come by and find out why people are excited.
But enough of that, on to the beer!
Offshore Amber Ale
Appearance: You guessed it…Amber. Light, cream colored head.
Smell: Slightly sweet, slightly malty, lots of delicious.
Taste: Very similar to the smell. Very mild, malty, light light hops bitterness and tad sweet. This beer is fantastically smooth. Perhaps our tastes have changed, or perhaps this beer has changed, but this year’s batch is the best we’ve tasted. Plus, you all enjoyed the New England Atlantic Amber from our May tasting so much, we figured we’d bring you another world-class amber beer!
Why We Like It:
Great after work beer, smooth and delicious. Nothing fancy here, and for this style that’s a good thing.
Goes with anything.
It’s from Offshore…we’re not sucking up, they really do just make excellent beer!
Clipper City Red Sky at Night Saison:
Appearance: Hazy gold with light white fluffy head
Smell: Spicy, a little bit of banana, hint of sweet citrus, mild wheat
Taste: This beer is pleasantly sweet in a way that’s refreshing and not over powering. It’s quite carbonated, which helps contribute to the light feel. We both found fairly strong orange notes (we think it rocks). There’s no orange added, saison yeasts just do cool funky things.
Why We Like It:
Saison in a 12oz bottle, how rockin is that?
6 bottles of saison for $9!
It’s a great departure from you standard summer beer but equally as refreshing.
Victory Golden Monkey:
Appearance: Golden, and Monkeyish…ok just Golden
Smell: Earthy and Citrusy
Taste: Golden Monkey…that funky monkey…no but really, its got some Belgian yeast funk goin on. You can taste the booze a little bit, but you’d never guess it 9.5%. Drink this cold though, as it warms, the alcohol shows through much more. This beer packs a serious punch; put back 3 of these and you’ve drank the equivalent of a 6 pack of beer. If that happens you’ll probably bust out your own Beastie Boys boys song about the beer…we have.
Special note: If you go to the brewery in PA, and you should, you can get a 750ml bottle for less than $5.
Why We Like It:
9.5% tastes like 7%
Induces awesome Beastie Boys singing
Refreshing enough for summer, boozy enough for winter (aka its awesome all the time)
When: Thursday July 19th 5-7pm
Where:
Bauer Wine & Spirits
330 Newbury Street
Boston, MA 02115
Cheers!
