New Surly Fest Lager - Beer for a Stein from a Can!

New beer from Surly. I think they're label best describes it:

A traditional Oktoberfest bier from Surly? Nein! If you want one of those, grab your passport and head over to Munchen (bring us back some pretzels). Our Fest inspired beer is brewed with imported malted barley, rye, and a German lager yeast straing. We hop this beer with a single variety... and then we dry hop it. A single hop, dry hopped, rye lager bier? Ja!

Damn! This is the first, and only, reason I wish I lived in Minneapolis! Of course, this one comes in a 16 oz. tallboy can.

This beer uses wet hops... Glacier I'm going to take a flying leap and guess. I LOVE wet hop beers, so I'm looking forward to this! I'd love to have a delicious and readily accessible wet hop pale ale.

New from Leinenkugel: Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout

Looks like they're adding an Imperial Russian Stout to their Big Eddy line which already has a dIPA in it. Hopefully this may hit MA? I'd love to get something beyond the Sunset Wheat or whatever it's called.

From the bottle:
This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

11.7%abv in a 12 oz. bottle.

Flying Dog Barrel Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter Review

Flying Dog Barrel Aged Gonzo Imperial PorterWe wanted to start something new with this feature; we’re picking a more expensive beer and letting you know what we really think about it. Spending $15+ on a beer can be tough, so we’re spending our hard earned cash and letting you know if it’s worth yours. We’ll tell you who will probably like this beer, instead of giving it a number, and will go much more in-depth than we normally do. With that out of the way, on to the beer!

Flying Dog Barrel Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter

Price: $16.99
Volume: 750ml
ABV: 9.5%
(for anyone trying to do that math the alcohol to volume comes out to the equivalent of about 5 regular beers)

Matt Steinberg to be brewer for Mayflower Brewing!

Do you remember us telling you about Mayflower Brewing Company? In Plymouth, MA?
http://drinkcraftbeer.com/forum/beer/new_massachusetts_craft_brewery.html

Well, have we got news for you!!! Matthew Steinberg, the storied brewer for Offshore Ale Company, and the creator of such beers as Hop Goddess, Rye Hop, Inkwell Double Stout, Fogcutter Breakfast Porter, Laughing Laird Scotch Ale, Stonewall Double IPA and more is leaving Offshore for Mayflower! As their head brewer! They will take delivery of their 20bbl brew system at the beginning of September 2007, and we should start seeing batches soon after that.

Can you wait? Because we sure can't!!!

This means two things:

1. Get out to offshore before the end of the summer just to say hi to Matt and have some of his last Offshore brews.

2. Get ready for a whole lot of great new stuff from Mayflower brewing!

More news to come.

DCB June Tasting at Bauer Wine and Spirits

Hi everyone!

First of all we'd like to thank everyone who came to our first tasting. It was a huge success. With that said you can expect a monthly tasting from us from here on!

Alright enough of that, on to what you really want to read...our beer pics and a preview of what you'll get to taste.

Smuttynose Summer Weizen AleImage

Appearance: Hazy straw colored…white fluffy head
Smell: Sweet, wheaty, grass citrusy

Taste: You have to forget this bottle says weizen on it for a moment and just enjoy this beer for what it is.  It doesn't have a typical weizen flavor but it does offer a nice grapefruit like bitterness, a nice slightly sweet aftertaste, and very mild light mouthfeel.

Why We Like It:

  1. Very smooth, high drinkability

  2. June is on the cusp of summer and this is just plain refreshing

  3. Its different that what you'd expect from this style...and we like that

People's Pint Our Oatmeal StoutImage

Appearance: Dark dark brown… head has large bubbles which reminded us of pancake batter
Smell: Amazingly roasty with strong hints of coffee from the roasted malt

Taste: Effercescent on the tongue… a little more than what we expected, but great for summer.  Yes we know what you are all thinking, we just said it's summer and now we're telling you about stout. This stout is different though; it's smooth with a hint of sweetness that really does make it great any time of the year. While many stouts don't taste quite as good cold, this one does and we love it for that.

Why We Like It:

  1. A refreshing stout… yes they exist, and this is proof

  2. It tastes as good as it looks, and it looks damn good

  3. Surprise your friends on a warm day with this… They’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Founder's Red's RyeImage

Appearance:
Hazy reddish orange… Fluffy, tight off white bubbles
Smell: Lots of hops...with a spice hinting at the rye within

Taste: We're suckers for a good rye beer and this is certainly one of the best out there. The hops are prominent, but not over powering. This beer is exceptionally crisp with a perfect rye spicyness at the tail end. If you haven't had a rye pale ale before this is a must try.

Why We Like It:
  1. Rye beers rock

  2. Deliciously hoppy without being overly bitter

  3. Badass artwork on a stubby bottle

Stone Old GuardianImage

Appearance: Translucent orangish-amber with a light off white head.
Smell: Sweet with a hint of hops and alcohol (this is 11% ABV afterall)

Taste: Sweet up front, hoppy on the back. Coats your tongue with a very smooth carmel aftertaste. NOT a regular summer beer. You can taste the alcohol in this beer and its one you'll want to sip on with a friend or two.

Ok, we're not going to pretend this is a true summer beer, because it isn't. So why are we tasting it? Well a couple reasons. First off, barley wine is good any time, though we'll admit that its better more often when its colder. The big reason here is aging, you may not have thought about aging a beer before, but this is a great bottle to begin understanding how beers age. Buy one of these and wait until late winter to open it. Not convinced? Drop by the tasting and let us prove it to you... We'll be pouring an almost year and a half old bottle.

Why We Like It:

  1. Ages well, buy two now… one for today, one for the winter

  2. A good reason to turn on your air conditioning. Pretend its winter, throw on a sweater and drink one with a friend.

  3. 11.25% alcohol by volume… need we say more?

When: Thursday June 28th 5-7pm

Where:

We hope to see you there!

DCB Tasting at Bauer Wine and Spirits

Hi all,

Some exciting news from DCB, we'll be hosting our first tasting May 30th at Bauer Wine and Spirits. Nick, the beer manager has been kind enough to allow us to use his store to let us share some great beers with you.

DCB's May Tasting will feature a Spring theme and include the following beers for your enjoyment:

Southampton Double White 7%abv Southampton Double White

Appearance:Pours with about 1 1/2" of pillowy head, translucent hazy light straw
Smell: Smells like spring and that's why we like it; hints of fresh hay and orange zest (that's a good thing to us).

Taste: Very light and effervescent on the tongue with a mild but not overwhelming sweetness and hints of banana. This is slightly sweeter than your average Belgian Wit, but given that it’s a Double Wit that’s to be expected.

Special Note: Drink this cold, it doesn’t taste nearly as good if it warms up.

Why We Like It:

  1. Very refreshing on a warm day

  2. At $10 a 6 pack this is actually a bargain given its 7% alcohol

  3. It’s a double wit in a 6 pack…enough said.

Dupont Organic Foret Saison 7.5%abvImage

Appearance: Pours with about 2” of bone white fluffy head, Opaque orange
Smell: Smells pleasantly earthy…with a hint of spice

Taste: Tastes crisp and a little spicy with a slightly funky aftertaste found in most of our favorite saisons.

For those not familiar with Saisons, they were historically brewed in Belgium during the spring for farm workers to quench their thirst. Because they were brewed before refrigeration this meant they were fermented at higher temperatures, causing a slight funk in the beer. Hell, if it was good enough to quench farm workers' thirst back in the day, it’s good enough to quench ours!

Why We Like It:

  1. A very accessible classic saison

  2. Crisp and refreshing; those farmers knew what they were talking about

  3. A great beer if you want to impress or just share with some friends

Oskar Blue’s Dale’s Pale Ale 6.5%abvImage

Appearance:
Pours a clear dark amber.
Smell: Lots of hops...mmmm hops

Taste: Make no mistake this is a hoppy pale ale. In fact if we’re being honest its really closer to an IPA. The hops are balanced by a nice bready malt undertone which makes this beer crisp and delicious.

Spring for us just isn’t right without a great pale ale, and what’s better than a great pale ale that’s also in a can. This beer just screams bbq and beach days.

Why We Like It:
  1. It’s a great crisp pale ale the walks the fine line between pale ale and IPA. Oh, and it comes in a can.

  2. This beer actually still tastes good if it warms up a little so bring this one to the beach. Cans are great on the beach too.

  3. Did we mention it comes in a can?

New England Brewing Company Atlantic Amber 5%abvImage

Appearance: Pours dark amber with a reddish hue and an inch of off-white head.
Smell: Very mild, very slight hint of hops, light malt

Taste: Slightly sweet malt. Very easy drinking. Barely there hops to balance the sweet. This is just a very smooth, easy drinking beer. Grab a sixer for yourself, and then another to share with friends.

Why We Like It:

  1. Simple easy drinking beer.

  2. A nice departure from hoppier beers, but not bland like light beer.

  3. Did we mention we like beer in cans?
