Hey ya'll,I was just wondering if anyone has successfully reused screw off bottles for home brewing.Everything you read says you can't get an airtight seal but I did a dry run and it seemed pretty tight.I think I'm gonna try it on one bottle my next batch. Also there's a great website called yobrew.com by some British dude(he even mentions somewhere you can can serve beer still,ie.uncarbonated, yuck)that has a really good sounding method to naturally carbonate w/o sediment.

Devon and I have never tried using screw tops... I don't know about it, it would be tough to get a seal. I've definitely used the Mr. Beer soda top type of screw tops back in college once. The beer was crappy, but it definitely carbonated, so that was cool! A way to naturally carbonate without sediment? Force carbonate? I know how to do that in a draft systme with a keg and C02 setup, but not otherwise. Do tell!

I haven't used the screwtops for beer, but do use them for homemade (well, sorta) soda and I do reuse them. It does create a good enough seal under pressure. You do have to screw them on fairly tight, but I've resused mine for about 3 batches of soda and never had an issue with them keeping a seal.

In general I use of a mix of 12 and 22 oz capped bottles and 32 oz grolsch style bottles. The grolsch style bottles work great and I can't see a screw top having any less of a seal than a grolsch style top. The only issue I see with reusing the screw top bottles is the thing plastic seal int he cap will eventually disintegrate but you just get new caps at that point.

It's my personal opinion that most people refrain from the plastic bottles for beer more for tradition, including myself. I disagree with the notion that the plastic imparts flavors, etc. The reality is that plastic is easier to handle, transport and will give you the exact same beer as a glass bottle. Since homebrewers are a bit more civilized than the masses and tend to drink their homebrews to taste the beer, the homebrew will always be drank from a glass so why the big difference transport receptical? With that said, all my beer goes into glass and only soda into the plastic bottles. Go figure.

Thanks for the responses, but to clarify, I meant reusing screw off beer bottles(like most commercial light lagers come in).And yes,I definitely enjoy beer out of a glass bottle exclusively. But speaking of plastic bottles, that's how that British dude carbonated his beer before bottling. He used 2 or 3 liter PET(a kind of plastic ,whitch Ithink is standard)soda bottles and said the seal was fine.He said you can then siphon fizzy beer if you first cool it to around 4deg.C(39 F).

Re:Bottling 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
i am wondering the same thing. I have 4 dozen bottles here and do not want to ruin a whole batch if the bottles that i have will not cap properly. i have screw cap glass beer bottles from commercial beer. and i have caps and a capper here. i tried one and the top came off really easily. I am wondering if it will cap better once the beer is in the bottle or shoudl i try to get bottles that are not screw caps? I have soem of those coming in a week.

Def do not use screw cap bottles with a capper. they won't stay on correctly. We just re-use beer bottles that we drink out of which mostly tend not to be screw tops. in addition we often bottle in bomber size bottles to reduce bottling time. Hope that helps solarpulse.

it's not recommended to use screw-off bottles for capping.

with that said, i've talked to a few people that have done it before it plenty of success with every batch. SUPPOSEDLY the trick is to using a bench style capper. The emily style i guess doesn't work as well for this.
