Well, you heard about it here earlier, Ommegang Chocolate Stout:

http://drinkcraftbeer.com/forum/events_and_tastings/this_weekend.html

Here's the label approval! Keg first, but I'll let you know about the bottle label when it's available.

Ale with Cocoa Powder... 7% abv.

Bottles hit the shelves October 12th according the Ommegang website. I picked up a few bottles today.

I had it the other day. Interesting, but not as good as I'd hoped. I think I went it with too high expectations, though. It was good. The chocolate just had kind of a cocoa powderish thing going on. Lacking something. Good, but not great. Kind of along the lines of the Rogue Chocolate Stout, but Belgian and dryer.

I'll second Jeff's impression. What I can say, is that this is a great beer. For a stout it is light, somewhat dry with great cocoa overtones. When I had a test batch at Ommegang, it was much better. For a Belgian stout it is great. It's no secret that if you want good stout, you don't look toward Belgium. I'm a Belgian beer snob to the highest degree, but, the fact of the matter is you will not find a good oatmeal or cream stout from that area. I've only had one Belgian stout before, and it sucked. This is a great improvement and I have no regrets for paying the $16 for it.

Out of curiosity, which Belgian stout had you sampled previously, and what didn't you like about it?

$15 or more for a bottle of Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence is highway robbery, even in NYC. It should probably cost something more like $11 or so.

I can't comment on which Belgian stout I had as I do not remember. I was at a Belgian beer bar with a friend who really wanted a stout and wasn't aware that it wasn't the right venue for a stout. Whatever it was, it was an imperial stout, very dry and just not my favorite. When I think stout, I want a nice malty, dark smoky flavor. I'm generally not an imperial stout fan which is what many Belgian stouts end up being.
