Beer vs. Wine for Food Pairing 1 Year, 3 Months ago

Here's an article about a dinner where they paired food with both a beer and wine, and had people vote on which they liked better. Includes Greg Koch from Stone.

I am by no means one of those who thinks beer pairs better than wine across the board. It's a lot of personal preference and also depends on the food. But I do prefer beer with my food (and almost always in any other situation). Plus, I like to push beer and food because it's not as widely accepted by mainstream America. Everyone knows food and wine... but a solid portion still need more education on food and beer combos.

Thanks for posting that, I was wondering about the results of that event. I love wine as much as I love beer and I personally think both have its place. But I agree with you Jeff, I personally tend to push beer and food more to people because it is such an underdog in that arena.

Yeah, I definitely enjoy a good wine... a nice crisp and acidic sauvignon blanc or something like that is great on a hot summer day... Put I'd prefer a pilsner. A big red is good with steak, but I'd prefer a stout or doppelbock. Pasta with any tomato based sauce may be one of the few times I'd prefer wine to beer. But I think a lot of that is because when I make tomato sauce, I use red wine in it. I've been experimenting with doppelbock or imperial stout in sauce. You have to use a rich, not hoppy beer I've found. At least the way I make it, because of the tomatoes I use, usually end up being sweet.

I agree with all, beer and wine do each have their place. I generally prefer beer, but I'm a bit prejudice as I'm trying to find out the best way to pair all foods with beer and sometimes do not give enough credit to wine. Here's a pic of a steak I had this weekend: Brooklyn Local 1 worked well with both the meat and the garlic mashed potatoes.
If the chance ever arises, Sam Calagione and Marnie Olds often do Beer vs Wine dinners in which they'll present a great 4-5 course meal and pair each course with a beer and wine and the guest vote on which is better. I attended one of these earlier this year and it was great. Beer won, of course.

Steak or Pizza + good beer = heaven
Most of the time at least, sometimes I am just not in the mood (or I can't have one). Jones Cream Soda or Root Beer also works just as well in just about any situation!

Jeff,
I really don't want to step on any toes by diverting people to another website (especially because it happens to be mine) but our show had the opportunity to film this event and we've added it to our Stone Brewing Co. episode. I'd love to give people the opportunity to check it out, but if you'd rather I didn't I fully understand.
That being said, the event was absolutely amazing! some of the best beer pairing I have ever experienced, and quite honestly some of the best wine pairing as well. Needless to say, Chef Gavin Kaysen (of Next Iron Chef fame) put together an incredible menu, and I think that people are going to start paying more attention to the beers they order with their next meal after watching this event.
cheers,
Jared

Hey Jared, that's fine man, let's see it. We just don't want people SPAMing and all that. If it's got merit for the thread, that's great! I'm eager to see it.

Jared,
Totally agree with Jeff, post it up. Good content is good content, as Jeff said we just discourage spam or over promotion.
