Terrapin Side Project Volume 1 - Hop Shortage Ale

Appearance: Orangy amber with very light white head. Heavy lacing as the head disapates
Smell: Floral hops with a nice fruity finish...this smells REALLY good.

Taste: Mmmmmm hops...delicious delicious hops. Very crisp and clean with a nice balanced malt sweetness. One of the best hoppy beers we've had in a long time. It's just bursting with hop flavor yet isn't overdone at any point. Its perfectly bitter, with a complex hop flavor and citrusy finish. If you were lucky enough to buy this drink it; if you see it buy it, it's that good. We really wish this was in 6 packs, and available all the time.

Portsmouth Brewery Kate the Great Imperial Stout February 2009

Appearance: Black
Smell: roasty

Taste: Roasty sweet chocolate, slight hint or dried fruits. Much sweeter than a lot of imperial stouts, but not too sweet. It actually comes over as incredibly smooth with a really nice mouth feel. Dangerously drinkable given then abv which is unknown but assumed to be around 10%. We'd split this 3 or 4 ways, it's really good, but the sweetness can get a bit overwhelming after 8 ounces or so, almost to the point it feels a little sugary.

Duck-Rabbit Baltic Porter

Appearance: Dark...really dark
Smell: Chocolate malt with a bit of creaminess, almost like a really dark chocolate ice cream.

Taste: This one threw us off a little bit, though not a in a bad way. While its certainly roasty, the flavor is dominated more by prune notes with a nice rounded sweetness. Theres a nice sourness to the beer similar to a very dark chocolate. Finishes extremely dry. This is an interesting beer that's worth a try. We'd split a bottle between two people though as its pretty intense.

Smuttynose Gravitation Quad

Appearance: A very pretty reddish brown, quite clear. Almost like a barrel aged rum. Light brown head the recedes quickly.

Smell: Sweet dark malt. Dark fruit and raisins. It smells sweet. The 8.5% abv is well hidden, though.

Taste: Wow, a lot of sweet dark fruit! Raisins and prunes come out at you strongly. It's quite a sweet and smooth beer. The Belgian qualities definitely take a back seat. The alcohol is hidden very well in taste as well. This is a good beer, but not a standout Quad if you want to go by style. If you're looking for a tasty, sweet beer, check this out. If you're looking for a great Quad, stick with Belgium.

Mad River Brewing Company John Barleycorn Barleywine

Appearance: Amber hued brown with a tawny head.

Smell: A robust blend of sweet malt and balancing hops. You definitely can pull some west coast hops out of the aroma.

Taste: Robust malt with alcohol coming through fairly strongly. A bit of a thin mouthfeel. The hops don't show very predominantly in the flavor.  These flavors may all meld together and get better over time. Not bad, but not amazing. There's definitely better options available.
