A Battle Of Wits - Craft Beer Takes On Blue Moon

A couple months ago we began noticing an interesting trend. People who used to bring light beer to a party were now bringing Blue Moon, a witbier made by Coors. For us this is both good and bad. It's good because people are looking beyond a typical light beer, but we felt like people were missing out on so much. The selection of witbiers made by craft breweries is quite vast and we wanted to help showcase some of the other options out there. In our minds there were much better offerings than Blue Moon, but we wanted to see what other people thought.

In order to test our theory, we pulled together four witbiers: Blue Moon, Avery White Rascal, Haverhill Brewery Whittier White and Allagash White. We gathered a group of friends - with the offer of free beer it wasn't hard - and began a blind taste test. Each taster was presented with four glasses, each with a sample of a different beer. We asked them to simply give impressions of each and rank them from best to worst. With that said, surely you want some results.

As with anything, people have their own tastes. As a result there wasn't a runaway winner here. With only one point seperating the top two we think it's fair to say it's a tie. Both Allagash White and Avery White Rascal drew much praise from our tasters.

Avery White RascalAvery White Rascal:
Our tasters found the earthy tones and light spice of the yeast refreshing in this beer. One tester described it as a "light good summer beer" while another noted it "had an array of flavors and was easy to drink"

Allagash WhiteAllagash White:
This beer was the other top pick for these beers, with a few tasters noting it was similar to the Avery. A taster who picked this as their first choice summed their opinion of this beer in one word that we concur with "Yum!" Others noted that the beer tasted "clean" and "smooth" and had light citrus notes.

Haverhill Brewery Whittier WhiteWhittier White:
We're sad to say there appears to be some severe bottling issues at the Haverhill Brewery. We sampled this beer a couple months ago and loved it. Sadly there was something clearly wrong with both six packs we bought this time around. The beer was sour and had an overwhelming citrus flavor. While a couple tasters enjoyed it, most did not. We thought it might just be one sixpack, so we opened another we got from a different store. It did taste very different, but not in a good way. We loved this beer when we first had it, but we can't recommend it at this time as the consistency just isn't there for some reason. Hopefully they will get that sorted out.

Blue Moon:
We're not going to lie and tell you everyone hated this beer. They didn't. The truth is Blue Moon stood up fairly well to the craft beers. But, in the end, far more people chose a beer other than Blue Moon as their favorite. There were no real complaints about this beer, it just didn't have the appeal that the Avery and Allagash had.

Otter Creek White SailSo, we now challenge you to determine your favorite. And in true DrinkCraftBeer.com fashion, we back up this challenge with an opportunity. We'll be offering the Avery and Allagash at our beer tasting this month so you can try them and see for yourselves. We've also added in one additional offering, Otter Creek White Sail to round out this tasting.
